This page describes a two step data evaluation software for particle number size distributions measured by custom-made mobility particle size spectrometers (type TROPOS-SMPS). The software has been developed for the EU infrastructure framework ACTRIS and the EU-projects UltraSchwarz and UFIREG. The software has been developed for the purposes of air quality monitoring and scientific infrastructure networks.

Precedural steps

1) Technical validation of data from mobility particle size spectrometer on a monthly basis

  • Multiple charge correction
  • Automatic data flagging taking account of diagnostic parameters (e.g. flow rates, temperature, relative humidity)
  • Automatic data flagging taking account of service maintenance and optional automated function control and zero-air measurement
  • Correction for diffusional losses (e.g. aerosol inlet system, diffusion dryer, Differential Mobility Analyzer)
  • Correction of the Condensation Particle Counter efficiency (optional)
  • Coincidence correction of the Condensation Particle Counter (optional)
  • Scalar correction factors from quality assurance experiments (optional)


2) End validaton of technical validated data on a monthly basis

  • Visual inspection of particle number size distribution and particle size classes data in a row
  • Data can be invalidated by the user

Input data format

TROPOS-SMPS data evaluation software is currently compatible with the measurement raw data generated by the data acquisition software of the Mobility Particle Size Spectrometer (Scan.exe version 4.6.7 and above).

  • *.raw - electrical particle mobility distributions
  • *.dia - diagnostic parameters of the mobility particle size spectrometer

Output data format

The TROPOS-SMPS data evaulation software fulfills the data format requirements of air quality monitoring and scientific infrastructure networks.

  • *.n8 - particle number concentration for seven size classes (10-20nm, 20-30nm, 30-50nm, 50-70nm, 70-100nm, 100-200nm, and 200-800nm in a special 'Bayern-Hessen-Protokoll' format (original time res.)
  • 1h*.txt - particle number concentration for seven size classes (10-20nm, 20-30nm, 30-50nm, 50-70nm, 70-100nm, 100-200nm, and 200-800nm in a special 'Bayern-Hessen-Protokoll' format (1h time res.)
  • *.txt - particle number size distribution (in dN/dlogDp) for 40 logarithmic-equidistant size bins from 10-800nm in a special 'Bayern-Hessen-Protokoll' format (original time res.)
  • *lev0.dat - EBAS NASA-Ames Level 0 format for mobility particle size spectrometer (original time res.)
  • *lev1.dat - EBAS NASA-Ames Level 1 format for mobility particle size spectrometer (original time res.)
  • *lev2.dat - EBAS NASA-Ames Level 2 format for mobility particle size spectrometer (1h time res.)
  • *.tcpc, *.scrn, *.zero - special (optional) data formats

Application of the TechVal_TROPOS-SMPS and EndVal_TROPOS-SMPS executables requires the installation of the LabVIEW 8.5 run time engine.
