Introduction

Mülheim-Styrum is a regular observation site in the air quality monitoring network of North Rhine-Westphalia (LUQS) in western Germany operated by the State Agency for Nature, Environment, and Consumer Protection (LANUV). Besides the LUQS station, IUTA e. V. Duisburg operates a research-oriented measurement container. The IUTA measurements presented here have been sponsored by the environmental ministry (MKUNLV) in collaboration with LANUV. The site is situated within a residential area, but is also within reach of a motorway (to the north), and industrial premises (to the east and south). Overall, the site qualifies as an urban background monitoring station (Quass et al., 2004) and has been used for exposure assessment in various health related studies (e.g. ESCAPE) and source apportionment studies (Quass et al 2004, Beuck et al 2011). Mülheim-Styrum was added to GUAN as a representative for the Ruhr Area, the largest urban agglomeration in Germany.
