This page describes TROPinv, a shareware application software for particle number size distributions. The software has been developed and maintained by TROPOS staff.


Precedural steps

1) Reformatting raw concentrations & diagnostics data (if required)

2) Condense the number of size bins (optional)

3) Extrapolate upper size distribution tail (optional)

4) Screen data automatically for technical faults (diagnostics parameters)

5) Assimilation of UDMA and DMA branches (only TDMPS and TSMPS instrument)

6) Multiple charge inversion (Pfeifer et al., 2014)

7) Corrections to particle number concentration

  • Scalar factors (e.g. due to flow rate anomalies)
  • CPC efficiency
  • DMA transfer function area
  • Particle losses in connecting tubes and inside the instrument

8) Normalise concentrations to 0°C, 1013 hPa

9) Rebin to standard set of size channels

Input file formats

TROPinv processes ASCII data files produced by Differential Mobility Particle Sizers or Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers. When using TROPOS data acquisition programs, these files are typically called:

  • *.raw - raw mobility size distributions
  • *.ral - raw mobility size distributions (extended version, with upscan and downscan stored separately)
  • *.dia - diagnostics parameters of the instrument
  • *.flw - diagnostics parameters of the instrument
